Description
Latin and Greek Stems and Roots Weekly Lists Unit One and Two BUNDLE with Digital Distance Learning Option:
This Digital Distance Learning Latin and Greek roots and stems UNIT ONE AND UNIT TWO BUNDLE is perfect for teachers who want their students to learn common Greek and Latin roots. Each unit includes:
- weekly lists (10 words on each list for eight weeks)
- a mid-week matching quiz
- an end-of-week test (which is progressive and includes stems from prior weeks)
NOTE: The end-of-week test includes 20 roots (except the first week, which has only ten because there isn’t an established pool to pull additional parts from yet). In the ninth week, the final test includes all 80 roots.
Because each week builds on the previous one, students retain information well. As an added activity, my students keep a ring of flashcards in their desks/backpacks and add ten new stems each week so they can study ALL the stems each week, not just the new ones.
Please take a look at the individual files here:
Why should students learn to use Latin and Greek stems and roots?
- It is part of the curriculum for vocabulary
- Latin makes unknown English words more accessible
- Children who have studied Latin score higher on standardized tests, including SAT, ACT, and MCAT
- It gives children a set of terms to help them unlock unknown words by using word parts
- Studying common Latin stems helps children with math and science vocabulary
NOTE: THESE FILES INCLUDE A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!
These products include a digital option in Google Slides (as well as the no-prep printable option). Instructions for using the digital portion appear at the end of each packet.
This PDF file contains 120 pages + Google Slides.

I like the resource, however, some of the examples are inappropriate for elementary school students. I have had to change several examples. For example, polygamy and polyandrous are not appropriate words to teach in school. I was a little shocked. The resource itself is put together nicely, but just be aware of some of the example words… you may need to substitute here and there. I use the example words as my spelling words each week.
Kirsten Tulsian –
Thank you for your feedback. Perhaps it’s a regional thing. I’m from Utah, and the word “polygamy” isn’t inappropriate here, as there are several fundamentalist groups that still practice polygamy (and many children come from them). It is also an important part of history. So, while you might feel like inappropriate terms are included (or you may disagree with that lifestyle), it’s quite literally a “way of life” for many people. I hope that provides some clarity on my end. Thank you again for taking the time to leave feedback. I truly appreciate it!
Much gratitude,
Kirsten

My students got a new list to study every week, they would write the stem word on a notecard, and the definition/example on the other side and study with a partner for 10 minutes every morning. I was amazed at how well they did on the quizzes and tests! These lists help them decipher the meaning of a lot of words in the texts they read. Great resource.
Emily Meireis –
This was okay, but I was expecting a little more out of it. It’s a good starting point.
Marsha M. –
I have used this for three years with my sixth graders!

I’m using this to help map out my greek/latin roots units. So far it has been a great resource and I think I’ll use a lot of it this year.
Laura J. –
This was great supplimental material for my seventh grader.
Beth I. –
I love how easy this resource is to incorporate in my class. The list is comprehensive and useful for all levels of students. I like to give the words at the beginning of the week then give the assessment at the end. I do this on a weekly basis, and my students are starting to make connections to words in other disciplines.
Daphne S. –
Thank you for a great resource! It was exactly what I needed.
Lorrie H. –

My students are enjoying this resource to learn stems. Moreover, they have started noticing the stems in reading in a variety of their subjects and are eager to point out what words they find from the stems they have learned. Wonderful resource. Highly recommend.
Kirsten Tulsian –
YAY, Dayna! They’re applying the knowledge to other areas of their lives, and THAT is truly a huge win! Thank you so much for taking the time to provide this valuable feedback.
So much gratitude,
Kirsten
